Knee pain, meniscus damage, cruciate ligament rupture
Pain in the knee joint often arises suddenly and without warning. These shooting pains are often associated with feelings of blockage or instability. Swelling or overheating often accompany these symptoms.
A distinction must be made between acute and chronic knee pain. Chronic knee pain develops continuously and increases in intensity over months or years. This pain arises most often during or after exposing the joint to increased loads and they are also associated with swelling and overheating. Patients often describe preliminary pain, meaning that pain initially decreases after a few steps only to become more severe with increased loading.
In the kybun shoe/on the kybun mat you can actively work against the pain; after only a few steps you will feel the positive effects in your knee joint.

Definition
Cruciate ligament rupture:
The cruciate ligaments form the central stabilising pillars of the knee joint. Their central function is to secure the knee joint during acceleration, deceleration and turning movements.
A cruciate ligament rupture causes a severe malfunction in the natural play of the joint. Training the stabilising leg musculature therefore plays an important role in conservative therapy. This compensates for joint instability in many cases and requires no surgical intervention.
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
Over 90 per cent of cruciate ligament injuries affect the anterior cruciate ligament. They are particularly prevalent in high-risk ‘pivoting’ sports such as football, hockey, volleyball, alpine skiing, tennis and basketball. - Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL):
Injuries to the posterior cruciate ligament usually result from violent backward shifts of the lower leg in relation to the thigh, such as a direct frontal impact to the tibial plateau.
Meniscus damage (lesion/tear/rupture):
The human knee joint has a medial meniscus and a lateral meniscus. Each meniscus consists of elastic collagen fibre tissue. The menisci are located between the sliding surfaces of the upper and lower leg. They move in the same direction when the knee contracts or extends, and during rotating movements to the outside or inside. The lateral meniscus is smaller and more mobile than the medial meniscus. The menisci serve to compensate for the incongruence between the upper and lower leg, to expand the contact surface and to transmit power. During power transmission, the menisci facilitate a 30–70 per cent distribution of the entire load (after a meniscus has been completely removed, the load on the cartilage increases). The meniscus is also responsible for shock absorption and joint lubrication and contributes to the stability of the entire knee joint. Meniscus tears can be traumatic or degenerative in nature. Medial tears are three times as common as lateral tears.
Causes
- Acute knee pain often arises in connection with a trauma (accident). The accident, often a twisting trauma during sport, leads to a ligament injury or meniscus damage. The cartilage surface can also be damaged. The most common ligament injury is a tear in theanterior cruciate ligament, which is associated with instability when walking. A meniscus tear, on the other hand, leads to a feeling of restriction and pain caused by pinched tissue.
- Chronic knee pain can be traced back to degenerative (wear-related) or inflammatory joint disorders. The most common of these disorders is primary gonarthrosis, or wear of the joint cartilage. This cartilage loss leads to a loss of surface smoothness and consequently to constant friction in the joint. This, in turn, leads to articular effusion, movement impairment and pain (for more information, see ‘Osteoarthritis of the knee’). Inflammatory disorders of the knee joint include bacterial infection and joint rheumatism.
- Other causes of knee pain:
Tear in the posterior cruciate ligament, luxating patella, leg axis malposition, collateral ligament injury.
Long-term consequences
That is why training the stabilising leg musculature is so important during conservative therapy or after an operation.

The kybun principle of operation – being proactive
Beware! Short-term effects are often confused with long-term ones.
The adjustment processes in the body triggered by the kybun shoe can take months or even years. Achieving lasting change is a protracted process.
Despite that, the effect of the soft, elastic material can also be felt quickly, for example in the relaxation of tense muscles and the alleviation of pressure points. These short-term effects must not be confused with the effects in the long run, since the long-term adjustment process cannot progress far enough in a week to be perceptible.
Short-term effects, on the other hand, can disappear again just as quickly as they came, or can even turn into complaints if you do not take the necessary breaks in the beginning.
This makes it important to understand that an initial reaction and a reduction of the positive feeling in the first few weeks with the kybun shoe does not mean that the kybun shoe is no longer working, but merely that the short-term sense of well-being is declining!
Initial reactions
Specific initial reactions with knee pain or after a knee injury:
When they experience knee pain, or after an acute injury, affected individuals automatically try to avoid the pain by limping.
The absorption of impact in the kybun shoe makes it possible to walk without a limp. With the kybun shoe, the regained joy in movement resulting from the reduction in pain may prompt the user to attempt much longer distances from one day to the next, thereby overtaxing the knee. The pain may return or intensify during the resting period after placing loads on the leg.
When you begin to use the kybun shoe, try not to increase your walking distance too quickly despite the regained joy of walking, and always remember to allow your knee frequent breaks during a walk so that you have an opportunity to notice initial reactions such as pain early on.

The following adaptations to the standard implementation of interval walking are important in case of knee pain or knee injuries :
Knee pain:
- Focus on slow exercises to promote stability and muscle coordination
- Slow exercise version: walking backwards (stability is provided by the transverse arch in the forefoot)
- Advanced: Walking downhill (forward)
- high requirements for stabilisation of the knees
Knee injuries:
- Objective: Build up joint-stabilising muscles
- see knee pain!
Application tips
- Upright body posture
- Do not make your steps too long
- Everyday/leisure: Walk with the kybun shoe or use the kybun mat as much as possible. Take note of fatigue > perform the kybun exercises regularly and take a short break if needed.
- Job: Sit as little as possible. Alternate sitting and standing in the beginning, and take along replacement shoes to change into
- If you feel unsafe/too unstable in the kybun shoe even after a test walk, we recommend a kybun shoe model with lower rebound effect. These have a somewhat wider sole in the area of the midfoot, providing added stability. Seek advice from your local kybun expert.
- If you find the kybun shoe mode with lower rebound effect too unstable for you as well, we recommend the kybun mat. You can choose the thickness you are comfortable with (the thicker, the less stable, the more intensive the training). You can also hold on to a fixed object. This can be helpful especially in the beginning after the operation, until you regain confidence in the hip.
- Precise movements are essential with knee pain or a knee injury. Pay attention to exact movements and be sure to take a break in case of fatigue or weakness. Lateral/medial rolling of the ankle joint on the soft, elastic material has to be corrected so that the load is applied to the foot, knee and hip with proper axial alignment. Read more under ‘Lateral/medial rolling of the ankle joint’.
- Contact a kybun dealer you trust if you have further questions, feel insecure or if there is no alleviation of pain when using the kybun shoe even though you are following the tips.
Opinions/customer testimonials
My steps are softened. My knees hurt less; there are no shocks and impact. I definitely won’t be giving the shoes away.
I do mostly wear them for walking, for long days at work. I wear them if I have to walk or stand for long periods. I think these are the best shoes and I have no pain in my back or knees. Without fail, I always wear the green and white shoes when I go to a St Gallen football match.
The advantage is that I experience far less pain. In normal hiking shoes, which don’t cushion your feet, my right knee always hurt. That stopped with the kybun shoes. While wearing it, I only experienced a very small amount of pain after I had been walking for a very long distance. With normal shoes, I would never have been able to do that. That’s really the advantage of wearing the kybun shoes.
How did you find out about the World of walk-on-air? I came on a daytrip with the Chrischona church in Amriswil/Romanshorn/Arbon.
How does it feel to wear kybun shoes?
Fantastic, it’s like walking on clouds. It’s very pleasant.
Would you recommend the product to others?
Absolutely, I would definitely recommend it!
Wherever I’m going, I enjoy walking in them because they are so comfy. You can walk on stony ground and up and down stairs without a problem.
How did you find out about the consultation day? We visited the headquarters here in Roggwil. We had a look around for ourselves. We heard about it from lots of different people. We tried on some shoes here. All it took was 10 or 20 minutes. We felt really good in them and decided to buy them. Then we tried them out in day-to-day life. After wearing these shoes for six months, I can now say for sure that it’s much better than it was. How would you describe how it feels to wear kybun shoes? Well, how can I describe it? It feels as though you’re walking on a cloud. The only disadvantage is that you walk a bit unevenly to start with. But you get used to it. Other than that, they are very warm. I was still having problems with my left leg. I used to walk with my foot tilted outwards. That has straightened up since I’ve been wearing these shoes. The pain has also disappeared. I used to have a painful knee, probably for that reason. The doctor said he’d give me an injection for it. Then I enquired about it and he said that one cortisone injection lasts three months. It’s four months with another method, and then you have to get it again. So I decided to leave it for a while. I was exercising anyway and moving my leg about. And now I’ve got these shoes and it’s been fine ever since. Would you recommend kybun shoes to others? Yes, definitely! We just recommended them to someone earlier today. He was staying with us but was heading on to Germany and said he’d look for some in Cologne.
Doing targeted exercises on the kybun mat allowed me to regain stability in my knee after I had an operation on my cruciate ligament.

My wife purchased kybun shoe (Bern) a few weeks ago and LOVES them! She was suffering a lot of pain in her feet related to a knee replacement some time ago and says she is enjoying a lot of relief. Now her co-workers want a pair!
I’ve already noticed an improvement when I’m out jogging after wearing kyBoot shoes for just one week. I’ve always had knee pain when I was jogging and always had to wear a bandage. After wearing kybun shoes for a week, I noticed that my knee wasn’t causing me any pain anymore. It’s great!
My daughter was aware of the shoes and said I should go to the Zurich Oberland region and try on a pair. I wasn’t that keen because I didn’t think they would work. When I had to go to hospital because of my foot problem, she told me about the shoes there, too. Then she said she’d have a look and see if they had kybun shoes in Bern, too. She said the shop was really close by and we should drop in. We asked if I could try on a pair and I was given a lovely pair of red shoes. I slipped them on and my knee pain completely disappeared.
I've always had back pain, for as long as I can remember. It spread into my legs giving me sleepless nights. After I'd really tried out almost everything, I thought this would be worth my while now. Especially as I know that your shoes are hugely important, and look out for it. So I went into a shop one day and had a look at everything. At first they gave me some shoes to try out, which I thought was great. I didn't want to spend that much money at first. I'd then only had these shoes on for 5 or 10 minutes when my knee hurt. At first I was appalled. They'd warned me about it, but I wouldn't have thought it would hurt that much. And then I was given a kyBounder and told to exercise on it 6–7 times a day. After just two weeks I realised that I could now stand on it on one leg without it hurting. Then I brought the mat back and bought my first pair of shoes. I haven't had any problems since.
The kyBoot is of greatbenefit to me. First of all, it helped with my knee problem, and then it helped with my heel spurs. That was the key thing. But my knees even hurt less, too,and it stimulates your circulation.
One advantage is that you're not as tired in the evening, and don't have such bad knee pain. One disadvantage is that you have to get used to the shoes at the start. At first it's tough, until you've built up the muscles. But at some point it's no longer an issue. In the winter I'll have to try out the shoes with a higher shaft, or the snow will get in the top.
In 1998 I had a serious motorbike accident. Everything was shattered from the knee down. First they wanted to amputate my leg, but then, fortunately, for me, the doctors managed to save it. From then on I was in pain every day. I looked into ways to soothe the pain, and that's how I came across the kybun shoe.
I have a heel bruise on my left foot and torn ligaments on my right knee. I tried everything - anti inflammatory medication, anti inflammatory patches, crutches, knee pads, heel pads. They all helped a little. But nothing helped me as much as the kybun shoe. I have two pairs and they are the only shoes that I wear now. The leather model is particularly comfortable.
"I am 74 years old and a passionate pilgrim. I first wore the kybun shoe on my last 250-mile walk along the French Way. Walking was very pleasant and my knee pain was a thing of the past. I was especially surprised at how cushioned and agreeable it feels to walk on asphalt. I could feel the kybun shoe strengthening the muscles in my legs and feet. I now only ever wear my sandals or my kybun shoes."
"The kybun shoe means you can walk actively and healthily even on hard surfaces. The soft, unstable sole is kind on your joints, exercises your muscles, improves your balance and stimulates receptors in your feet. From a medical perspective I thus specially recommend the kybun shoe to patients with poor posture or knee problems."
It's simply like being on an air mattress. It's much softer and shocks are absorbed. I can walk around normally without having to put too much thought into taking the pressure off my knee to stop the pain. That means that – in these shoes – I can walk absolutely normally, and I have the feeling that I walk much more gently, and I don't have any pain any more.

I feel good in these shoes. I can walk and stand in them as long as I like. My hips don't hurt, my knees don't hurt. I simply feel fine. Watch the video
I am an event producer and while working I walk many hours during the day, from morning till afternoon. I wear my working clothes and at 5 pm I change into formal dress, so I look elegant. I haven’t found a pair of shoes that are comfortable, that I can wear and walk in up to 6 pm. By the time the event began I would be in pain: pains in my knees, in my back, I used pain killers, ointments and so on. The event had not started yet and I would be in tatters. Until I came across the ideal thing: kyBoot shoes. From the moment I put them on my body felt differently immediately, really, no kidding. There was a different feeling in my body. I felt less pains, until they disappeared completely, after the third or fourth time I walk in the shoes. I was not in pain. I started to produce my events in leisure, without pain killers or ointments. I recommend them to anyone, whatever the pain, they can help everyone.
I suffered with pains in my legs and knees. I work as a waitress and we do 8 hours shifts. I looked for shoes that could help me endure the entire shift. Then I discovered kyBoot and bought a pair. I adjusted to them very quickly, I had no problems. I enjoy working in them; it feels like walking on pillows, or clouds… It's been a year and I use only them. I recommended to the chefs at the restaurant to buy them because they are very comfortable for standing and they do not slip in the kitchen, which is good for both, chefs and waiters. And that's it – it's wonderful.
In 2010 I tore a ligament in my knee and I had sever pains in my knee, until I came across kyBoot shoes that were recommended to me and I started wearing them, and what a miracle! After I got used to them, the shoes did their job and the pain decreased. I recommended the shoes to my husband who has back pain, to my brother and sister, and I think all of them enjoy the shoes and are happy.
